The view of Niesen mountain from Lake Thun

Mount Niesen towers like a pyramid as we cruised around turquoise Lake Thun. We love the chalets and church spires dotting lakeside villages, perfect for unwinding in clean air, deep blues, and postcard-worthy scenery. We regret not taking the funicular to the top. The view would have been spectacular. A month after we came back, on May 28, 2025, we were saddened to hear that the Swiss village of Blatten in the Valais canton was largely buried by a massive landslide of ice, rock, and mud from the Birch Glacier

Melker Stiftskeller restaurant, Vienna, Austria

Deep beneath the city streets, this historic monastery cellar restaurant serves excellent food and our favorite wine Sturm from the monastery's own vineyards. The wine is still fermenting and tastes sweet, tart, and fizzy, available only from mid-September to mid-October.

Hallstatt, Austria, a UNESCO World Heritage town

Hallstatt feels like a fairytale brought to life, nestled between a serene alpine lake and towering mountains. While you're there, you can also visit the Dachstein Ice Caves, the crystal-clear Gosausee, or take a little trip to nearby Bad Ischl or Obertraun. Its peaceful, breathtaking, and unforgettable.

Giethoorn, the Netherlands - quaint, warm, and irresistibly photogenic

A car-free village - just boats, wooden footbridges, and bliss. Giethoorn is a dreamy Dutch village where you glide through flower-lined canals amidst cozy cottages with thatched roofs, brick walls, and blooming gardens. Straight out of a storybook, nestled beside quiet canals.

Annecy, France - Venice of the Alps

A well-preserved medieval old town with cobbled streets, canals, and a glacier lake. It feels like Venice met the Alps, with cafés, markets, and endless charm. The view from the bed in our hotel, looking out through the balcony over the turquoise lake framed by mountains, feels like a photoshopped scenery - so flawless it almost seems unreal.

Oliver Twist' phone number

One day, a colleague asked, “Marissa, do you have Professor Charles Twist’s phone number?”
I said, “No, but you can call his brother.”
She blinked. “Who’s his brother?”
I grinned. “Oliver Twist, of course.”
She frowned. “But I don’t have Oliver Twist’s phone number either.”
At that point, I sighed. The joke was lost on her.
“Of course you don’t,” I said. “Oliver always wants some more anyway. Just call HR."
